mary callahan baumstark
Born and raised in Montana, with a deep and abiding love of all things natural, big skies, low humidity, mountains and rivers, I moved to the grey, concrete jungle of Toronto in 2014, where I discovered new loves like long walks, getting lost, autumn, and the city at night.
I am a maker, of jewelry and ceramic objects. My most recent craftivist performance was entitled "The Menstrual Cup Project." You can find it on my blog.
I'm a lapsed poet.
I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Montana with an emphasis in Ceramics in 2013.
I joined the Contemporary Art, Design, and New Media Art Histories Masters cohort at OCAD University in the fall of 2014 and finished in April 2016.
During my time at OCAD University, I taught and lectured for art history classes, providing study skills, test preparation, and course concept instruction. I also, along with my CADN cohort, organized and put on an AMAZING graduate conference #trending:mobilizing art and culture!
My research (Craftivist Clay: Resistance and Activism in Contemporary Ceramics) focused on the emergence of ceramic craftivism in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australia (1989-2016) and the influences of feminism, DIY, and performance on the studio ceramic community, and was awarded OCAD University's Graduate Exhibition Medal in 2016.
I am currently the Executive Director of the Lewistown Art Center in Central Montana. My time is spend curating monthly exhibitions, running a shop that consigns work from more than 150 inter-mountain artists, programming cultural events, and administrating an arts education non-profit.
I am interested in interdisciplinary writing and learning, trendspotting in contemporary ceramics, and organizing socially engaged or activist projects.
You can find me all over the place, but I recommend the following...
